Outer Space Gallery

Working with artist-run initiative Outer Space, with support from Brisbane City Council, the project converts an existing light-industrial building into a small artist-lead arts institution.

The scale of the existing building volume offered the opportunity to make simple built insertions that rework the former warehouse into a civic space for the social engagement of the local arts community. Basic light fittings are arranged simply to provide uniform light while being distinctive to the venue. A new ‘chubby’ wall provides much needed storage space and defines the public room, and institutional nature of this arts space, through its scale and opening proportions. Simple gestures with large affect, the design of the galleries is symbolic of the care, enthusiasm and institutional attitude of this volunteer based organisation.
