Client: Institute of Modern Art
Location: 420 Brunswick St, Fortitude Valley
Project type: Public / Institutional
Completed: 2017
Recognition: Queensland Chapter of the Australian Institute of Architects - Art & Architecture Award, 2018

Completed in collaboration with artist Celine Condorelli and landscape gardener Pete Shields, the pavilion revitalises the previously underutilised courtyard at the Institute of Modern Art. With the courtyard facing north-west, exposed to Brisbane’s harsh midday and afternoon sun, the new pavilion signals a place for the community to gather and is carefully formed to create shade, define a public room, and invite social occupation. Simultaneously framing and containing space, the pavilion creates a delightful backdrop to activities within the IMA forecourt, while also promoting a place of refuge and prospect. The sculptural and scaffold-like structure acts as a trellis and provides a soft, green sub-tropical canopy via the over-growth of the integrated landscaping and vines. An enhanced climate for enjoyment.
