Client: Arts Queensland / Queensland Government
Location: 420 Brunswick St, Fortitude Valley
Project type: Public / Institutional
Completed: 2019

The new gallery for the Institute of Modern Art was developed through the refurbishment of a former restaurant into a contemporary art venue. A new building entry from Brunswick Street provides a welcoming entrance to the exhibition space, with a lively connection between the life of the street and the activities within the gallery, while working with the existing heritage fabric of the building. Electrical and air-conditioning infrastructure has been carefully coordinated to minimise their physical and visual presence in the exhibition space.

Rooftop infrastructure on an adjacent building, to accommodate large projectors to digitally project artworks onto the façade of the Judith Wright Centre, have been carefully designed for safe access and ease of building maintenance.
